Interview with a contortionist: Jamie Langridge

We asked some questions to British contortionist, Jamie Langridge who performs and lives in the south of England.

Hey Jamie!, What got your interested in Contortion to begin with?

I first got interested in contortion when I was nearly 15 because I loved the movement in gymnastics and I was always really flexible myself.

How long have you been performing?

I have been performing on and off for 17 years.

What have been your biggest challenges as a performer?

I’ve had big challenges such as not actually knowing what I was doing until the last minute or what time I am due to perform. As I need to know a time so i know when to be ready by.

What advice would you give young people trying to get into performing?

My advice is to follow your heart, train properly and take care of your body. Make sure you trust the right people, as there are some strange ones out there and can often say they are someone they are not. Put yourself first and ensure you have time to warm up.

Do you have a coach currently?

No I don’t.

Are you performing with a show or solo currently?

I have some upcoming shows at the moment. I did a show the other day which I really enjoyed and met lots of lovely people.

What has been your biggest challenge as a contortionist?

I personally do not get many challenges to do with contortion as I ensure I have a good balance. I train well and I have days to rest. Having EDS I have to ensure I really look after myself to I can keep it up for as long as possible.

What is your biggest inspiration?

That’s a hard one as everyday I see a contortionist or meet one, I get inspired to push myself further and to keep performing as much as possible. I love teaching people as I teach everyone the safe way to train and to get further into poses.

Anything else you’d like to tell other young contortionists out there?

I also feel as I got older I have more passion for contortion not just because I know I’m good at it but I love seeing how different everyone is and I always tell everyone to be as unique as possible.
